Next generation sequencing (NGS) technology is changing at a rapid pace and recent advances make it feasible to use NGS for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and associated antibiotic resistance in clinical samples. This image shows the readout from a new nanopore based sequencing technology, MinION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies), being used to identify the bacterial pathogen and associated antibiotic resistances in an infected urine sample. This procedure takes approximately 12 hours compared to 48 hours for the current culture based methods.
