The image shows biofilms formed by genetic variants of a single isolate of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa- the major cause of lung infection in cystic fibrosis. Biofilms are thought to be involved in most clinical infections. An understanding of biofilm formation is vital for diagnosing infection and for developing new treatments.
