Working with farmers
Matt Heaton, John Innes Centre
Ethiopian wheat farmers come running to watch rust pathologists take samples for the new MARPLE Diagnostics field lab, designed by Diane Saunders from the John Innes Centre. For the first time, fungal threats to wheat crops can be identified within country, in just a few days. Within the lifetime of these farmers there have been numerous rust outbreaks resulting in huge crop losses. This technology provides the vital time needed to spot and prevent emerging threats before an epidemic can form.
