Brassica napus pod section
Eva Wegel (JIC BioImaging) and Nicola Stacey (Østergaard lab), John Innes Centre
A cross-section through the seed pod of Brassica napus (rapeseed). The pod was embedded in wax, sectioned, dewaxed and stained with Alcian Blue and Safranin O. Sections like this one are used in Lars Østergaard’s lab at the John Innes Centre on the Norwich Research Park to study seed pod morphology in different genotypes and their effect on seed pod shatter. Seed pod shatter is the premature opening of the pod in the field resulting in loss of the valuable seeds. The section was imaged on a widefield microscope in DIC without bias and in four different fluorescence channels followed by pseudo-colouring of the fluorescence.
