Streptomyces pigments
Matt Hutchings, University of East Anglia

Scientists at the University of East Anglia on the Norwich Research Park are rewiring natural signal transduction pathways in actinomycete bacteria to activate the production of silent and novel antibiotics. This image shows a colony of Streptomyces coelicolor mtrB mutant bacteria precociously making the red and blue antibiotics called undecylprodigiosin and actinorhodin.
