Colourful leaves
Zigmunds Orlovskis, John Innes Centre

Plant pathogens are known to secrete certain molecules which alter plant processes to benefit the pathogen. Scientists at the John Innes Centre on the Norwich Research Park are studying one such molecule, SAP54, that is secreted by the plant-parasitic bacterium Phytoplasma and is able to change plant colour. Illumination of the infected leaves with certain wavelengths of light allows us to measure the reflected light from the leaf surface and quantify the colour change induced by the pathogen.
