Katarzyna Ignasiak and Tony Maxwell, John Innes Centre
PhD student, Kat Ignasiak, working in the JIC Insectary. Scientists at the John Innes Centre on the Norwich Research Park are using insects, such as the giant lime green stick insect shown here, in the search for new antibiotics. Analysis of the bacteria found in the insects’ gut bacteria can show evidence of antibiotic resistance, suggesting that their plant food contains antibiotic compounds. These can be isolated and characterised by a variety of chemical methods.
