Life in earth

This image shows the diversity of soil organisms living in a sample of soil collected from a rhubarb patch on the Norwich Research Park (NRP). Dilutions of the soil sample were made and spread onto plates of soya flour mannitol agar media plus nystatin and nalidixic acid, to grow. This medium promotes the growth of actinomyces, a group of bacterial organisms which are producers of antibiotics and other pharmaceutically important compounds that are being studied by scientists on the NRP.
