European roller
Phil Saunders (UEA) & Harry Ewing

This two week old European roller (Coracias garrulus) chick was photographed in the Republic of Cyprus in June 2015. A collaborative study, based at The University of East Anglia on the Norwich Research Park, is investigating the effects of climate and land use change upon the breeding and migratory ecology of this species across its european range. Breeding parameter data, including chick weight (as pictured here), is collected from all accessible nests within the study area throughout the breeding season, allowing us to investigate whether there is any variation in chick growth rates or nest productivity caused by differences in surrounding land use, location, or climate.
