Schizosaccharomyces pombe NCYC 3092, also known as ‘fission yeast’. This species of yeast is used in traditional brewing (e.g. to produce millet beer) and as a model eukaryotic organism in molecular and cell biology. The National Collection of Yeast Cultures on the Norwich Research Park currently holds over 4000 different yeast strains, including the prestigious Schiz. pombe cell cycle mutant collection produced by Nobel laureate Sir Paul Nurse.
