Agriculture & climate change
Kevin Hiscock (UEA)
East Anglia is an important cereal, vegetable and root crop growing region with a total farm-gate value of greater than £4 billion, contributing 18% to the UK agricultural economy. The future sustainability of farming in this region is challenged by climate change, with a trend towards reduced water availability. Research on the Norwich Research Park is aimed at developing more drought-tolerant plant species as well as practical measures for improving soil moisture retention and infiltration through changed cultivation practice. Improvements in water supply-demand management, irrigation technology and catchment-based land use management approaches to enhance water quality will all make better use of existing water resources.
