Nitrogen cycle enzymes
Julea Butt (UEA)

Nitrogen oxides and nitrogen oxyanions are reduced by bacteria to support energy conservation, detoxification and nitrogen assimilation. Together these transformations result in the cycling of inorganic nitrogen between different oxidation states on a global scale. Researchers in the Earth and Life Systems Alliance (ELSA) on the Norwich Research Park are studying enzymes that catalyse these reactions. Synergistic structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods are used to resolve the atomic structures and catalytic mechanisms of these enzymes.
