Sediment trap deployment
Tim Jickells (UEA)
NRP-138

A sediment trap is deployed in Marguerite Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula as part of a project to understand the controls on primary production in Antarctic coastal waters, and the fate of the organic matter produced. The project was a collaboration between NRP scientists from the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA and the British Antarctic Survey base. Their results show that phytoplankton growth rates are very high during a very short growing season, briefly producing a lot of organic matter, although much of this is consumed rapidly as it sinks.
