Microbiology of Movile cave
Alexandra Hillebrand-Voiculescu and Colin Murrell

Movile Cave, Romania, is an unusual cave system which has been completely cut off from the outside world for hundreds of thousands of years. It harbours many unusual invertebrates which are endemic to the cave. Their food source is supplied by bacteria which grow on the methane and sulfurous compounds which are present in underground lakes in the cave. ELSA researchers on the Norwich Research Park have been collaborating with Romanian scientists to study the microbiology of the cave
